T. Hanksgiving Week

It's Thanksgiving in the US, but it's T. Hanksgiving everywhere.

Tom Hanks has been in like a billion widely seen and available movies, let's watch some of them.

There are a bunch of Hanksy movies on Netflix Instant - The Man with One Red Shoe, The Burbs, Turner & Hooch, You've Got Mail, Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, and Sleepless in Seattle (but we don't have to limit ourselves to those - why not some Toy Story or Big or That Thing You Do?). Let's pick a few and watch 'em next week. I am thinking one a day Sunday the 23rd through Friday the 28th, though obviously you don't have to watch all of them to participate. Basically just a short-term movie club. What do you say?

I haven't seen The Man with One Red Shoe since I was a kid! and I haven't seen The Burbs since about a month ago, so I'm due for another viewing very soon anyway...

Philadelphia is one of those movies I've been meaning to do an FPP on, it's got some interesting background stuff and is *criminally* under-rated.

Love this idea!

This is quite recent (2013) and not really a feel-good Thanksgiving week movie, but anyone looking to see Hanks in a more actorly role should check out Captain Phillips.

JCIFA, if you want get the Philadelphia post up this week, let me know so it can coincide! (If not, NBD!)

What do you mean, this week? You mean today? Sure I'll see what I can rustle up.

Question: is posting at a later time, like 3-6pm, okay? If so I can do.

Looks like I'll be posting on Philadelphia on November 28th (day after Thanksgiving). I'll just use the tags you've got in this post, plus a few others.

Will update the FanFare Wiki with info. as soon as I can - others are welcome (and encouraged) to update it, as well.

HOW DID I MISS THIS QUESTION??

You REALLY want to see Cloud Atlas.

He plays, like 7 different characters! And he's great!!

By the directors of The Matrix (Wachowski siblings) and the director of the German film Run, Lola, Run - it is underrated and spectacular.

Fun Fact: Tom Tykwer, the German director, also wrote the score. Including the orchestral piece that the novel gets its name from, A Cloud Atlas.

Wait. What was that?

Oh yeah.... So the film is based on a best selling novel from 2004 called Cloud Atlas, and that is the name of an orchestral piece that one of the characters in the book writes... And while they deal with the same subject matter, the film takes the ideas and themes in the book so so much farther, even to creating the damn music that is a major plot point in the book.... I just.... It. Is. Epic.

Cloud Atlas.

Enjoy.

Cloud Atlas is a 3 hour movie, and it has some violence, so not for children. FYI.

PS - don't read up on the film or watch any trailers. Just watch it cold. You will enjoy the journey it takes you on sooooo much more if you don't know what to expect. Enjoy!!

This is my vote to put Joe Vs. the Volcano on the schedule as well, if there is still room.

(I did not love the book Cloud Atlas but I will watch the movie if there's a lot of Hanksian exasperated yelling)

Pointer: Philadelphia

Sorry about the delay, I kept finding good stuff online, and then there was a server error when I first tried to post it and I got all twitchy and waited a bit longer.

So sorry about the delay on Cloud Atlas! I was unexpectedly in an area where I couldn't get a signal for most of yesterday. Post is up here.
